This is a NOVELLA of approximately 24,000 words = 70 odd pages.
It's the first day of Ninna's job in the local animal shelter...and a dog is talking to her. Not just any dog...a fat, old, smart-alecky Basset Hound who says his name is Mosey.
She can't quit, she needs this job. And then there's the yummy vet. Who turns out to live across the street from her in a much bigger house than her tiny house. Big enough to hold a few animals - including the mouthy Mosey. With all this going on, she doesn't have time to worry about the rash of break-ins and the sense of being watched. She's too busy worrying that she's nuts.
When Ninna agrees to dog sit for the cute vet from work, she sees it as a trial at being a pet owner and a way to build on her budding relationship with the vet. For Mosey, this weekend means time to get to know each other.
For the stalker who's tracking Ninna's movements, it means…opportunity.

Book Review- It’s a Dog’s Life by Dale MayerNinna Bradford is starting a new job at The Lost for Options Animal Center. She is nervous about working with the animals as she has never has a pet in her life. She hesitates and has help from vet Stuart MacIntosh to start her first day. The center is crazy and Ninna is tempted to leave but she needs the job. As she waits to begin she is surprised to hear a strange voice speaking to her. She panics. She has been on medication and seen doctors for this same problem. She fears she is having a relapse.
As it turns out it is a basset hound named Mosey that is reading her mind and speaking to her. She tries to ignore him but he is impossible to forget. She waits to hear from her doctor and takes one day at a time. Her job makes her nervous and so does being home. There have been several break-ins in the neighborhood. She is surprised to learn that Stuart is her neighbor. She is interested in the handsome vet but she fears he will think her crazy since she can hear Mosey in her head. However she works very hard not to react when Mosey talks to her.
When Stuart asks her to house and pet sit while he is gone for the weekend, she agrees to do so. She wants to see if she should get a dog. After seeing a shadow outside her window, Ninna is starting to lean in that direction.
Eventually Ninna discovers she is being stalked and is happy to be staying at Stuart’s house. When the stalker makes his move, Mosey helps protect Ninna. Stuart is shocked at what has transpired when the truth comes out.
This was an interesting book. I am a dog person and a basset hound owner. So this story was fun to read. The author definitely wrote an accurate picture of the breed. I was chuckling out loud. I felt sorry for Ninna because she thought she was going crazy. I would probably react the same way if I started hearing voices in my head. She was a little unsure of herself which I wished wasn’t the case. I like a strong female character. I think she found a great guy in Stuart and I think he was instantly interested. So it was fun to see him flirt with her a bit. It was a cute story. I give it a 3.5 out of 5.

It a Dog Life a romantic comedy with a canine sidekick edition by Dale Mayer Romance eBooks Reviews
Ninna Bradford is starting a new clerical job at a combination pet hospital, spa, and shelter. She's never had a pet or been around animals much in her twenty-something life, so she's unsure how she'll react and relate to being surrounded by so many pets. She's also had some health issues lately that had kept her from working for months, so she really needs to be able to work through her doubts and keep this job.
Luckily for Ninna, the pet center's veterinarian, Stuart McIntosh, befriends her on her first day and helps her get settled in and introduced around to the other workers. An extra bonus is that Stuart is handsome and single and seems to be attracted to Ninna.
The many dogs and cats and other critters roaming around have Ninna almost overwhelmed, but she's managing to keep cool while waiting to be given her first work assignments. That is, until one of the dogs, an overweight basset named Mosey starts talking to her telepathically and wants to be her new best friend. Of course, Ninna thinks she's losing her grip and probably her mind along with it and tries to ignore the mutt and his sometimes cheeky comments, but Mosey tends to make himself hard to ignore.
But Ninna has an even bigger problem than a talking dog, one that she's yet to become aware of. She's got a stalker, and this guy is bad news from his yard-long rap sheet to his skill at breaking into houses.
What will happen? Will Ninna be able to deal with her new four-footed chat buddy? Will she find out about the stalker in time to save herself? Will she lose her mind and run screaming out of town as fast as possible?
This story is hard to classify, beyond the obvious "fiction" category. It's part romance, part fantasy, part thriller, and definitely a large part dog story. We never find out too many details about Ninna's past or specifics on her health problems, even when those may impact how she deals with her situation with Mosey and at work. Granted, it is a short story, and not a lot of time can be given to detailed background, but having a bit more of it would have helped to understand Ninna's reactions better if we'd been given more information.
This story is a light, quick read that has a little something for just about everyone without being overwhelming. The clever ending the author comes up with is worth the visit.
I had downloaded this ebook tale from years ago as it sounded like fun. I enjoy reading easy romances, especially filled with humor, In between my exciting murder mysteries. I was not disappointed in the least!
A young woman who has suffered her entire life with 'voices' finds a job after a six-month layoff. The woman, Ninna, lives in a neglected, due to the housing crash, neighborhood, but is proud of owning her own tiny home. There has been numerous break-ins but Ninna feels she is safe due to living in her home versus the bank foreclosures. Is she?
The new job is at a local animal shelter that offers classes and more. To Ninna's concern, the voices seem to have returned, rather one voice, that seems to belong to Mosey, a Basset Hound.
This novella was wonderful reading. The romance between the Veterinarian and Ninna and the romance between Ninna and Mosey was funny, serious, and at times, not expected.
The ending was amazing and no I'm not going to tell you. You should truly enjoy this light-hearted romance of the twenty-first century!
