I've had this book on my to-be-read pile since the day it was released. But I've shirked reading it because, at heart, a romantic. I want Kate Middleton, er, I mean Cinderella, to get her Prince and live happily ever after, and the blurb suggested strongly that this story was not your conventional fairy tale.Indeed it wasn't. A well-written, easy to read fantasy, I was drawn into the post-honeymoon stage of Cinderella's life with the skill of veteran author, although this is Davidson's debut novel.
The only minor issue I had with the story was I felt that the characterisation of Prince Rowland was weaker than the other characterisation, making Cinderella's choices blurred at times.
But, as Cinderella is slowly awakened to a deeper knowledge that the grass isn't always greener of the other side of the hill, the emotional layers of the story deepen into a poignant melancholy. How many women, on marrying the Prince of their dreams, realise that once the honeymoon is over, no life can ever be the perfect life we dream of.
Instead, what Cinderella finds is a power and a responsibility that she didn't know was hers for the taking. Stepping into her full power brings moments of deep realisation: this is, ultimately, a tale of a girl who was a victim becoming the captain of her own fate, never an easy or comfortable road to take.
I was left moved and, yes, as a romantic, a little bit saddened by this tale. But I'm glad I read it, because it was profound and challenging and, while the difficulties of life were never minimised, it ended on a new beginning: Cinderella had learned just what she was capable of and we know that she has the strength to do what must be done.
Davidson is an author to watch, and I look forward to reading her future work.

Michelle Davidson Argyle expands upon the fairytale's happily-ever-after--or not--in her take on Cinderella in Cinders.
Cinderella has her prince and everything her heart desired, or so she thought. A mysterious stranger haunts her dreams, the kingdom is in trouble under her parents-in-law's iron-gripped rule, and her prince is sweet, but she ponders whether or not he loves her or if it is just the spell that fuels his desire. She must find her own magic and what her heart truly desires or she might lose everything she holds dear.
Michelle Davidson Argyle's Cinders is not your Disney's Cinderella. Argyle weaves a tale of dark beauty where there is no happily ever after, but dreams can still come true. An ancient, mysterious feel embodies this novella. Fairies, elves, and sprites sprinkle through the pages. Pure magic embodies Cinderella, but areas of gray rule. Cinders is almost tragic. Argyle's prose entrances the reader, and I'm not sure the spell is quite broken yet after finishing this novella. Cinderella is real, flawed, yet beautiful. I loved how Argyle took me through her "ever after" version.
Cinders is what fairytales should be.
Like any good fairy tale, Argyle's Cinders reads less like a romance or a fantasy and more like literature that has the sensibilities of historical fiction and simply happens to include fantastic people doing fantastic things in fantastic places.
This briskly moving novella is not a retelling or a reinterpretation of Cinderella. In so far as the events contained in the traditional and popular Cinderella stories are largely foundational to the events and characters of Cinders, it might be said that this work is a continuation of Cinderella. I think such a characterization, however, does a great injustice to what is, truly, a story that stands on its own.
Readers who approach Cinders as they might a YA fantasy might be surprised by its maturity, shocked by its moments of brutality, and discomfited by its approach to love and sensuality. On the other hand, readers who expect Argyle's novella to have the tone of a scandalous tell-all revision may well be uneasy with its emotional sensitivity, disappointed in its gentle intellect, or confused by its subtlety. If instead, you approach Cinders as I did, as a 180-some page literary fairy tale, you will enjoy the lean richness of its language, the emotional realness of the main character, and the deftness with which Argyle is able to create a complex story that manages to read as if it were tidy.
Was this book short? Yes. Was it truncated? Absolutely not. I actually loved the length. To me, it signified that Argyle took pains to refine the language into a beautiful and lyrical style. I thought this story was refreshing, a book where the author does not descend to insulting filler, gimmicks, or cliffhangers that are obviously meant to wring more money out of readers. The ending left me curious to know more about this world, but completely satisfied with what I had. That is no easy feat.
If I were someone who easily gave five-star reviews, I would not have hesitated here. There was one tiny flaw, though for me, it was difficult to connect to the main character, and I felt the story would have been so much more poignant had I done so. I think part of the problem was that Cinderella had an uncertain relationship with every other character in the book, and that made her into the kind of person with whom it is difficult to empathize.
But do not let that deter you from reading this book. It was excellent. Argyle obviously has great potential, and I could definitely see myself giving her five stars for her next book, which I'm eager to read. I would highly recommend Cinders to anyone who wants to read a book in its entirety on their day off, curling up under the blankets and escaping into someone else's world.
